Lost in Market Research

Lost in Market Research

Market Research can be quite tricky and it may take a while before you could properly assimilate and use better judgment. Often it is a trial and error thing—you will have to go with the flow and experience both the good and the bad, to really gain a better grasp of things.

Always, when one begins to assess what they are doing wrong, it is mostly related to “not doing enough” or “not doing anything at all”. Many people

  • Do not be afraid to try new things. This is true with all kinds of business, especially web-based industries that embrace much of the new. In this growing world, you have to cope up with the speed and you cannot be complacent. They say success begins when you go out of your comfort zone, so even if something is new and unfamiliar, go for it. Even the most experienced divers are afraid of taking a plunge—but understand that you will not know for sure, unless you make a dive for the deep end. This something new, could easily be your perfect something.
  • Do not claim to be an expert. You are new so do not be afraid to accept that fact. Most importantly, do not pretend to know everything and do not expect to be hitting bullseyes with every hit. Even the most experienced market researchers miss, sometimes. As a newbie, you will best behave in a very cautious and calculated manner. Work with a plan and work from a blueprint so that you will be properly guided. Cockiness and pride often meets failure—so get down your high horse and have humility to start small.
  • Do not be afraid to take risks. People would rather go on the safe side because they feel more secure that way. While this basically plays on your strengths, taking risks and facing your weaknesses and fears usually leads to greater heights. The rate of failure in this juncture is high, this cannot be denied, but the most courageous risk-takes often claim the biggest prize at the end.
  • Do not be frightened of mistakes. People are afraid of mistakes because sure enough they are wasteful of time, money and effort. Why expel energy just to meet defeat? Also, when people meet errors it is common to be disheartened to lose faith in things. Well, it is all a matter of looking things at a different perspective. Sure, failures can be disheartening but they could also be a good training ground. Make the most mistakes now, so that you can learn from them and never make them again. Failing can be very painful, but it does not mean that you have to remain down. If you fall, you can stand up again—and take more definitive strides to your goal.
  • Do not hesitate to ask help. Help is always available to those who seek it. If you are unsure and faced with a conundrum, do not hesitate to ask help from someone who is more learned than you.

Making Mistakes

You can never guarantee an error-free run in market research. Mistakes are part and parcel of the entire course. In fact, the more experienced marketers got to where they are by tripping and falling, first. The best advice you can have is to set forth and overcome all fears and apprehensions that are slowing you down and obstructing your path. You will make a mess of things, probably, but do not fret because you will learn so much from these. Eventually, everyone finds a perfect rhythm and you will too, you just have to go for it.

In the end, no matter the outcome, at least you can say that you have tried—than to fail at even trying.
